Sprains

  • Sprain is a twist to a joint resulting in pain, swelling, numbness or instability
  • It is important that joints are well aligned, if not, they become unstable, abnormal movement ensues eventually resulting in sprain
  • Sprains can occur in the small joints within the foot and hand to big big ones like hip.
  • The symptoms of a sprained joint is pain, swelling, burning sensation and sometimes change in color
Home management of a sprained joint is Rest, Elevation, Compression and elevation(RICE)
It is advisable to consult your physiotherapist to rule out stress fractures
Once fractures are excluded Physiotherapy begin as soon as possible
Pain relieving methods and Joint Immobilization is recommended for some period 
The patient should be allowed to engage in strengthening and flexibility exercises prescribed by the physiotherapist
